Why Edwin Sifuna Must Remain Calm and Loyal to ODM’s Legacy

Watching Edwin Sifuna speak today, flanked by Dr. Oburu Odinga, was a reminder that wisdom still exists in Kenya’s political space. Sifuna’s calm tone, respect, and composure reflected not only his growth as a leader but also his understanding of timing and loyalty. At a time when emotions are raw following Raila Odinga’s passing, his statement stood out as both measured and mature.

It is evident that some voices around him are attempting to stir divisions within ODM, urging him to challenge established party figures or carve out a premature political path. But those who truly know Sifuna understand he is not easily swayed by reckless advice. He recognizes that starting unnecessary conflicts within the party now would not only damage ODM’s unity but also betray the trust Baba placed in him.

Oburu Odinga Represents Raila’s Legacy

Let’s be honest — fighting Oburu Odinga at this moment would be the same as fighting Raila himself. Dr. Oburu, as the elder statesman and symbolic bridge to Raila’s political heritage, currently embodies the soul of ODM. The party is still grieving, its members still coming to terms with the loss of a generational leader.

For Sifuna, this is the time to protect that legacy, not challenge it. His role as ODM Secretary General gives him immense influence, but it also demands restraint, empathy, and strategic patience. The greatest show of leadership now is unity, not rebellion.

The Bungoma Question and Political Temptations

There are those from Bungoma whispering to Sifuna to abandon ODM and seek a political future back home — perhaps as senator or governor. But we must remember the political reality: when Sifuna last vied for office in Kanduyi, he barely managed 2,000 votes. His political star truly rose only after Raila Odinga believed in him, appointing him as ODM Secretary General and later supporting his successful run for Nairobi Senator.

The same voices now cheering him to leave would be the first to mock him if he returned to Bungoma politics, claiming “Siasa ya Nairobi sio ya Pungoma.” They would remind him of how unforgiving local politics can be, even to those who once walked the corridors of power in Nairobi.

Stay the Course and Plan for 2027

The wisest course for Sifuna now is stability. Remain in ODM, avoid internal wars, and uphold Raila Odinga’s legacy during this sensitive period. Kenya is watching how ODM manages this transition, and Sifuna’s posture could determine his political destiny.

When the time is right — perhaps in early 2027 — Sifuna can make his next move, not in haste or defiance, but with respect and strategy. A partnership with Governor George Natembeya, for instance, could create a formidable alliance for Western Kenya’s political future. But that will only be possible if he protects his credibility and maturity today.

In politics, timing is everything. Edwin Sifuna’s wisdom will not be judged by how loudly he speaks now, but by how patiently he waits — honoring his mentor, uniting his party, and preparing for tomorrow.
