A Visionary Leader and Builder of a Kenyan Brand
Under his leadership, Pwani Oil Products Limited evolved from a small-scale coconut oil plant into a diversified regional powerhouse. Tributes and Legacy
Former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala mourned Malde as a committed advocate of business growth.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Naresh Malde, the founder of Pwani Oil,” said Balala. “His vision, hard work, and commitment to local enterprise transformed Pwani Life into one of Kenya’s most trusted homegrown brands. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of entrepreneurs along our Coast and beyond.”
Beyond business, Naresh Malde was known for his philanthropy, supporting education, healthcare, and community development projects across Kenya’s Coast region. Colleagues and industry peers described him as a quiet giver who believed in uplifting society through sustainable business practices.
How the Malde Brothers Built Pwani Oil
Pwani Oil was established in 1981 by Naresh Malde, Ramesh Malde, and their late brother Anil Hansha. The company name “Pwani”, meaning “Coast” in Swahili, pays homage to Mombasa, where the first factory was founded.
Originally a coconut oil production plant, Pwani Oil evolved into a large-scale operation, producing corn, sunflower, and palm oil before transitioning into a fully-fledged refining and consumer goods company. In 1985, it rebranded as Pwani Oil Group Company.
Today, the company manufactures leading brands such as Fresh Fri, Salit, Mpishi Poa, Fry Mate, and Popco under its cooking oils division. Its personal care and hygiene products include Detrex Germ Protection Soap, Diva Beauty Soap, Sawa Family Soap, and White Wash Bar Soap, among others.
The Malde brothers’ guiding principle was to offer quality, affordable, and locally made products that promote healthy living — a mission that has made Pwani Oil a trusted name in households across East and Central Africa.
An Enduring Coastal Legacy
Naresh Malde’s death marks the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most prominent industrial families. His influence stretched far beyond business, embodying the spirit of Kenyan entrepreneurship that balances innovation with community development.
He leaves behind a legacy defined by resilience, family unity, and the vision to transform local industry into a continental force.
