A winless season is when a sports team fails to record a single victory in its regular season. It is the opposite of a perfect season and is considered one of the rarest yet most notable occurrences in sports history. Such seasons have occurred across multiple professional and amateur sports, from American football and basketball to association football (soccer), cricket, and rugby.
Gridiron Football
In American football, winless seasons are particularly memorable because teams play relatively few games. Before regular-season overtime rules were introduced, tied games still counted as winless seasons. The NFL has seen multiple teams endure entire seasons without victories, such as the 2008 Detroit Lions (0–16) and the 2017 Cleveland Browns (0–16), both of which set modern records for futility. The first team to suffer this fate was the 1922 Columbus Panhandles (0–8), highlighting the long history of struggling franchises.
Other leagues like the Arena Football League (AFL) and United Football League (UFL) have also had winless teams due to smaller season lengths and roster instability.
Canadian Football League
The CFL has had very few winless seasons since its official establishment in 1958, with the most notable occurring prior to the modern era. Teams like the 1949 Hamilton Wildcats and the 1938 Montreal Royals went entire seasons without a single win. Due to the CFL’s point system awarding standings points for ties, completely winless seasons have become virtually impossible in the modern league format.
Basketball
In professional basketball, winless seasons are almost impossible due to long schedules. The NBA’s shortest season (50 games in 1999) still leaves room for a few wins. The worst NBA record belongs to the 2011–12 Charlotte Bobcats, who finished 7–59. However, smaller or defunct leagues have witnessed true winless seasons—such as the Atlantic City Seagulls (0–28) in the USBL and the 2013 Mersey Tigers (0–33) in the British Basketball League, both notable for record-breaking losing streaks.
Association Football (Soccer)
Worldwide, several football clubs have gone through entire seasons without a single victory or draw. Examples include Maccabi Nes Tziona (Israel, 1949–50), Antigua Barracuda (USL Pro, 2013), and Glasgow Women FC (Scotland, 2022–23). In Turkey’s TFF 1. Lig, Yeni Malatyaspor (2024–25) lost all 38 matches, marking one of the worst seasons in professional football history. These records often lead to relegation or club dissolution due to financial collapse or fan backlash.
Australian Rules Football
In Australian football, several teams have endured winless seasons across major leagues. In the VFL/AFL, St Kilda holds multiple records for seasons without wins, including 1897 (0–14) and 1899 (0–17). Similarly, University (1913–1914) failed to win a game before exiting the league. These seasons highlight the struggles of early clubs during the sport’s formative years.
Cricket
In English first-class county cricket, Derbyshire County Cricket Club has the unfortunate distinction of two completely winless seasons (1884 and 1920). Since cricket seasons are long and often include drawn matches, losing every game is exceedingly rare. However, Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, and Leicestershire have each recorded back-to-back winless campaigns, marking low points in county cricket history.
Rugby
Rugby’s shorter seasons make winless campaigns more plausible. In Rugby League, the West Wales Raiders (2018) became infamous for losing all 26 games, conceding a record 2,106 points and enduring a 144–0 loss—the heaviest defeat in rugby history. In Rugby Union, the Pretoria Bulls (2002) and Johannesburg Lions (2010) both completed Super Rugby seasons without a single win, emphasizing the challenges of maintaining competitiveness in expanded leagues.
Esports and Other Sports
Even in modern digital competitions like the Overwatch League, the Shanghai Dragons (2018) became the first esports team to finish a season winless (0–40). In netball, Central Pulse (2008) and Adelaide Thunderbirds (2018) also suffered winless campaigns. In ice hockey, the HK Dniprovski Vovky (Ukraine, 2007–08) lost all 30 games.
Legacy and Cultural Impact
A winless season often becomes part of sports folklore, symbolizing resilience, rebuilding, or poor management. While these teams are remembered for failure, they also highlight the unpredictability and competitiveness of sports. Some franchises—like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1976)—have even risen from winless beginnings to eventual championship success, turning their darkest seasons into inspiring comeback stories.
