Located in Townsville, Queensland Country Bank Stadium is a modern multi-purpose sports venue that stands as a testament to the city’s growing sporting culture. Opened in February 2020, the stadium is home to the North Queensland Cowboys and hosts various sporting events, including NRL matches, concerts, and community events. With a seating capacity of 25,000, the stadium is designed to offer a top-tier experience for fans, with plans to expand to 30,000.
Construction and Design
The Queensland Country Bank Stadium was built as part of a joint initiative between the Queensland Government, Australian Federal Government, and Townsville City Council. Construction commenced on August 16, 2017, and was completed in December 2019, at a cost of A$318 million. The stadium sits on the site of the former Monkey Island industrial estate, and the overall project was part of the Townsville City Deal.
The stadium’s design, by Cox Architecture, features a horseshoe-shaped roof that references the pandan leaf, a symbol commonly associated with the region. The cantilevered roof ensures that about 80% of the seats are protected from rain, and the structure is engineered to withstand the area’s hurricane-force winds.
Features and Layout
Queensland Country Bank Stadium features a distinctive layout that enhances both the spectator experience and the aesthetics of the venue:
- North Stand: A single-tiered stand that is the only part of the stadium without a roof. This stand offers an unobstructed view of the Townsville city center.
- South and West Stands: Both feature two levels, with the upper tier of the West Stand offering suites and sky boxes for VIP experiences.
- East Stand: The largest stand, which seats 10,300, with a view of the surrounding area and an open layout that offers a vibrant matchday atmosphere.
The roof consists of 36 trusses of varying dimensions, assembled using a 400-ton crane. The scoreboard is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, measuring 200 square meters.
Major Events and Usage
The stadium officially opened on February 22, 2020, with a concert by Elton John, and the North Queensland Cowboys played their inaugural match here on March 13, 2020, facing the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL.
Though primarily a venue for rugby league, the Queensland Country Bank Stadium is also well-suited for football, concerts, and community events. With a capacity to expand up to 40,000 for large-scale events, the stadium’s flexible design allows for a variety of uses, accommodating everything from music festivals to corporate gatherings.
Sustainability and Community Engagement
The stadium not only serves as a sports hub but also integrates sustainable design principles and promotes community engagement. With two pedestrian footbridges, the venue is easily accessible, encouraging greater use by both locals and tourists. Public access ways and green spaces around the venue provide a welcoming environment for fans before, during, and after events. The stadium’s promenade and square entrance offer meeting spots for fans to gather, creating a social atmosphere that extends beyond the match itself.
Future Plans
Queensland Country Bank Stadium remains integral to Townsville’s sports infrastructure and will continue to support the North Queensland Cowboys and other events. With expansion plans in place, it will be interesting to see how the venue evolves as Townsville grows and new events are added to the schedule.
