Vihiga County, located in Kenya’s western region, is home to several stadiums and sports facilities that play a pivotal role in local, national, and even international events. While some of these venues have long been in use, they are actively being upgraded and modernized by local government efforts to accommodate a growing interest in sports and recreational activities.
Kidundu Stadium (Majengo)

Kidundu Stadium, often referred to as the main venue for sports in Vihiga, is located in Majengo. This facility is well-known for hosting various sporting events, including local and regional football matches. Currently, there are plans in place for a major upgrade, with military engineers tasked with transforming it into an ultra-modern venue capable of hosting up to 10,000 spectators. This ambitious project is expected to significantly elevate the county’s sports infrastructure.
Mumboha Sports Ground (Luanda)

Mumboha Sports Ground, located in Luanda, is a versatile multi-purpose facility used for a wide range of sports, including football and athletics. It has hosted both national and international events and continues to serve as a key venue for local communities. Though already a popular spot, efforts are underway to improve its facilities to better serve athletes and sports enthusiasts.
Hamisi Stadium (Shamakhokho)

Hamisi Stadium, situated in the Hamisi constituency, is a smaller venue primarily used for local sports events. It is an important community hub, offering residents a place to gather and support local teams. The stadium is in need of further development to fully realize its potential as a regional sports facility.
Joe Kadenge Stadium (Gisambai)
Joe Kadenge Stadium, located in Gisambai, is envisioned as a sports academy project. Named after one of Kenya’s football legends, Joe Kadenge, this stadium holds great promise for sports development in the region. With plans for expansion and the introduction of training facilities, it aims to nurture young talent and further develop Vihiga’s sports scene.
Other Notable Facilities
Vihiga County also features several other sports venues, including:
- Mwidinga Stadium: Located behind Bunyore Girls, this facility is still under development, but it holds potential for hosting local sporting activities.
- Mumboha Stadium (Luanda): In addition to the Mumboha Sports Ground, the Mumboha Stadium itself is a prominent venue in Luanda, supporting both athletic events and community activities.
- Mahanga Stadium (Kiguti wa Msungu): This venue, located near Mahanga Market, is another developing facility that is showing “good progress” but requires further investment and improvement to meet modern standards.
Ongoing Development Efforts
While many of these facilities are often referred to as “stadiums,” it is important to note that some of them are historically underdeveloped. However, the county government of Vihiga is actively working to upgrade these venues to meet the increasing demand for sports infrastructure. This includes modernizing the facilities to attract larger crowds, support more sports disciplines, and provide better amenities for athletes and spectators.
