The History and Development of Optus Stadium

The development of Optus Stadium began in 2014 after a successful design and build competition. Initially, two sites near downtown Perth were considered, but the Burswood location was chosen due to its proximity to the Swan River and the availability of space. Construction began in 2014, with the project reaching completion in 2017, ahead of its planned opening in 2018.

Originally estimated to cost AU$700 million, the final cost of the project came to AU$1.6 billion, including the surrounding precinct. The stadium was initially named Perth Stadium, but in 2017, Optus secured the naming rights for the stadium, making it officially known as Optus Stadium.

The stadium’s design features three-tiered stands that provide excellent sightlines for fans, and the entire venue is covered by a lightweight membrane canopy, protecting around 85% of spectators.

The exterior of Optus Stadium is covered with glass and anodized aluminum, giving it a natural and warm appearance. The stadium’s roof features two large, high-definition screens, each measuring 340m², ensuring fans have access to clear visual information during events.
