Linus Kaikai Recalls His Final Conversation with Raila Odinga

The passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential political leaders, has plunged the nation into deep mourning. Raila, affectionately known as Baba, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in Kochi, India, where he had been receiving treatment. His death has left a void in the country’s political landscape, and tributes have poured in from both local and global leaders.

A Final Conversation Full of Optimism and Humor

In a poignant moment on Citizen TV, Royal Media Services (RMS) Group Editorial Director Linus Kaikai shared a personal recollection of his last conversation with Raila Odinga. Kaikai described a phone call they had just days before the tragic news broke. The call, lasting about seven minutes, painted a picture of Raila as a vibrant, cheerful leader, despite his ill health.

“I heard someone who was cheerful,” Kaikai recalled. “He even joked, referring to the reunion between President William Ruto and his former rival, KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, saying ‘broad-based imekuwa kubwa’—meaning the new political alliance had grown significantly.”

A Political Icon Who Defined Kenya’s Politics

Kaikai went on to highlight Raila’s immense influence on Kenya’s political trajectory, describing him as a visionary leader who shaped the nation’s politics for over two decades. “Raila Odinga amekuwa kiini cha siasa za Kenya kwa zaidi ya miaka ishirini,” Kaikai remarked, emphasizing that Raila’s political journey has been one of resilience, courage, and unwavering dedication to democracy.

His career began in earnest in the 1990s when Raila first attempted to run for president in 1997. Kaikai described Raila as a champion of justice and democracy, whose political life was marked by immense sacrifices, including spending more than eight years in detention for his opposition to the then-government. His experiences during this period were later documented in his memoir, The Flame of Freedom, which chronicled his struggles and resilience.

A Leader Driven by Selflessness and Unity

Raila Odinga’s political career was not just about power—it was about people and the nation’s unity. Kaikai reflected on Raila’s ability to make political decisions with great care and focus. He noted that Raila was a staunch advocate for unity, as exemplified by his recent collaboration with President Ruto. The two leaders put aside political differences to ensure that Kenya remained united, preventing further political divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

“Raila aliungana na Rais kwa nia ya kupunguza shinikizo lililokuwepo ndani ya ODM na kuepusha mgawanyiko wa kisiasa,” Kaikai said, highlighting Raila’s deep commitment to national unity.

A Dignified Farewell

As Kenya prepares to bid Raila a final farewell, Kaikai expressed his hope that the late leader will be given a dignified send-off befitting his legacy. “Tunatarajia Raila apewe safari ya mwisho ya heshima,” he said, echoing the sentiments of many Kenyans who wish to honor the life and contributions of the man who helped shape the country’s political fabric.

Raila Odinga’s legacy will forever remain etched in the history of Kenya, and his passing has left a lasting impact on both his supporters and critics alike. His life was a testament to unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and the pursuit of justice. As the nation mourns, his influence on Kenya’s political journey will continue to be felt for generations to come.
