In response to the national mourning period declared by President William Ruto, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced the suspension of all football league fixtures across the country. This suspension, which includes matches in the FKF Premier League, National Super League, Women’s Premier League, and grassroots competitions, will last for the entire seven-day mourning period in honor of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
A National Mourning Period for a National Hero
The FKF, in an official statement, confirmed that all football matches scheduled during this period would be postponed. “Following the Government’s declaration of seven days of National Mourning in honour of the late former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all league fixtures scheduled during this period,” read the statement from FKF General Secretary Harold Ndege.
The federation expressed its heartfelt condolences to the Odinga family, recognizing Raila as not only a political icon but also a strong advocate and supporter of Kenyan football. Raila’s influence in the sport, particularly his long-standing support for local clubs like Gor Mahia, is well remembered. He was a familiar face at stadiums and emphasized football’s power to unite Kenyans across the political and social spectrum.
Raila Odinga’s Legacy in Football
Raila Odinga was known for his lifelong support of Kenyan football. His presence at local football matches, his passion for community-based clubs, and his encouragement of football as a tool for national cohesion made him a significant figure in the sport. His contributions went beyond politics, as he consistently used his platform to elevate the importance of the sport in Kenya.
“FKF joins the nation in mourning a great leader and a passionate supporter of Kenyan football. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement concluded, reaffirming the federation’s commitment to honoring Raila’s legacy.
The Suspension of Fixtures: A Unified Moment of Reflection
This suspension aligns with the government’s directive that all national institutions and organizations cease celebratory activities during this time of reflection on Raila Odinga’s life and his contributions to Kenya’s democracy and social development.
FKF assured that league activities would resume once the official mourning period concludes. The federation promised to communicate revised fixtures in due course, allowing fans and players to look forward to the resumption of football activities in a fitting and respectful manner.
A Nation in Mourning
As Kenya mourns the loss of Raila Odinga, his contributions to both the political and sporting landscapes are celebrated by many. The suspension of football matches is a testament to the deep respect and admiration that the nation holds for the late leader. Raila Odinga’s legacy, marked by his tireless efforts for democracy and his love for football, will continue to inspire generations to come.
