Biography
His Excellency Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem Al Ghanim assumed the role of Minister of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs in October 2021.
Career
His Excellency has a distinguished military background, having served in various capacities within Qatar’s Armed Forces. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in 2016. Prior to his appointment as Minister, he held the position of Chief of Staff of the Qatar Armed Forces from 2013.
Throughout his career, His Excellency held significant roles including Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Training at the General Command of the Armed Forces. He also served as Director of Air Operations and held command positions such as Commander of the Air Operations Centre, Commander of the Air Defense Command, Operations Commander of Doha Air Base, and Commander of the 7th Squadron of the Mirage-F1.
Education
His Excellency graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics in 1978. He received his military training at the Royal Academy Sandhurst in the UK in 1975. Additionally, he obtained a fellowship from the Pakistani Air War College.
Responsibilities
As Minister of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs, His Excellency oversees various aspects related to the ministry, including:
- Disseminating Islamic culture and education, enhancing religious awareness, and highlighting Islam’s influence on human civilization’s development.
- Supervising the endowments department, managing the Zakat charity fund, and overseeing the construction and licensing of mosques.
- Monitoring the education of the Holy Quran and supervising procedures related to the Hajj pilgrimage.
