Sauti Sol is a Kenyan Afropop band formed in Nairobi in 2005. Over nearly two decades, the group has become one of Africa’s most successful and influential music acts, blending Afropop, R&B, and Afro-fusion with Kenyan cultural sounds. Known for their vocal harmonies, innovative artistry, and electrifying performances, Sauti Sol have earned international awards, global tours, and collaborations with top African and international stars.
Formation and Early Years (2005–2011)
The band was founded by Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, and Savara Mudigi, who first met at Upper Hill School in Nairobi as part of an a cappella group called Voices in the Light. They were later joined by guitarist Polycarp Otieno.
The group initially performed acoustic songs before evolving into a professional Afropop band. Their first major breakthrough came after participating in the Spotlight on Kenyan Music competition (2006), which led to their signing with Penya Records.
Sauti Sol released their debut album Mwanzo (2008), followed by Sol Filosofia (2011). The latter earned them several awards, including Best Fusion Artist/Group of the Year and Best Music Video at the Kisima Awards.
Rise to Continental Fame (2012–2015)
In 2012, the group released their self-titled EP in collaboration with South African rapper-producer Spoek Mathambo. By then, they were gaining traction with their unique sound and had started touring across Africa and Europe.
In 2014, their single “Nishike” sparked controversy in Kenya due to its provocative video, which was banned by most local stations but boosted their popularity.
Their third studio album, Live and Die in Afrika (2015), marked a turning point. Released online for free for 48 hours, it attracted over 400,000 downloads worldwide. The album included the hit “Sura Yako,” which triggered the viral Lipala Dance Challenge across Africa.
Global Recognition (2016–2020)
Sauti Sol’s success expanded internationally with collaborations and major awards. In 2019, they released their fourth album Afrikan Sauce, featuring guest artists such as Patoranking, Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Vanessa Mdee, Khaligraph Jones, and Nyashinski. The project was designed as a cultural exchange, blending sounds from across the continent.
In 2020, the group signed with Universal Music Africa and released Midnight Train, their fifth studio album. It featured collaborations with India Arie, Sho Madjozi, Soweto Gospel Choir, and Mortimer. The record received wide acclaim and solidified their reputation as Africa’s Afropop leaders.
Hiatus and Solo Careers (2023–present)
In May 2023, Sauti Sol announced an indefinite hiatus after nearly 20 years together. Their final concerts, held during Sol Fest Nairobi (November 2023), were sold-out events celebrating their legacy as Kenya’s greatest band.
