Bien-Aimé Alusa Baraza (born December 28, 1987) is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, guitarist, and music executive. Widely known by his stage name Bien, he is one of the most influential figures in Kenyan music. He rose to fame as a co-founder and lead vocalist of the award-winning Afropop group Sauti Sol, before launching a successful solo career in 2023.
Early Life and Education
Baraza was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. He attended Upper Hill School, where he met future Sauti Sol bandmates Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi. Initially, the group performed as an a cappella ensemble called Voices in the Light before evolving into the Afropop powerhouse Sauti Sol, with the addition of guitarist Polycarp Otieno.
Bien later studied at United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), where he graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies.
Career with Sauti Sol (2005–2023)
Founded in 2005, Sauti Sol grew into one of Africa’s most successful musical acts, celebrated for blending traditional Kenyan sounds with contemporary Afropop, R&B, and Afro-fusion.
The group released several critically acclaimed albums, including:
- Mwanzo (2008)
- Sol Filosofia (2011)
- Live and Die in Afrika (2015)
- Afrikan Sauce (2019)
- Midnight Train (2020)
Their music earned global recognition, winning MTV Europe Music Awards, AFRIMA Awards, and international tours.
In May 2023, Sauti Sol announced an “indefinite hiatus” following a world tour. Their final concerts at Sol Fest in Nairobi (November 2023) were sold-out events that marked the end of an era.
Solo Career (2021–present)
Bien began exploring solo projects before the band’s hiatus. In 2021, he collaborated with jazz pianist Aaron Rimbui on the EP “Bald Men Love Better.”
His breakthrough as a solo artist came in November 2023 with his debut album “Alusa, Why Are You Topless?” The 16-track project featured collaborations with Ayra Starr, Ms Banks, Scar Mkadinali, and DJ Edu. Singles such as “Ma Cherie” and “My Baby” became instant hits across Africa.
The album earned him a 2024 South African Music Awards (SAMA) nomination in the “Rest of Africa” category and was later submitted for consideration at the 2025 Grammy Awards (Best Global Album).
In 2024, Spotify named Bien the most-streamed Kenyan artist, cementing his dominance in East African music. He also released a deluxe edition of his album featuring collaborations with Fally Ipupa and Adekunle Gold.
Artistry and Influence
Bien’s music is characterized by a fusion of Afropop, Afrobeats, Rhumba, and R&B. His lyrics often explore love, relationships, social issues, and political commentary. Notably, his track “Maandamano” addressed Kenya’s protest movements, showing his commitment to socially conscious art.
He is also an outspoken advocate for artists’ rights, copyright reforms, and fair royalties, often criticizing Kenya’s Music Copyright Society (MCSK). Additionally, he has voiced support for LGBTQ+ rights in Kenya, making him a rare outspoken figure in the industry.
Business Ventures
Alongside his Sauti Sol bandmates, Bien has co-founded several creative enterprises, including:
- Sol Generation Records – a record label nurturing new African talent.
- Hustle Sasa – a digital marketplace for creatives.
- Sol Kids – producing children’s content such as books and animations.
- The Manhattan Ke Bar and Grill – a Nairobi nightclub opened in 2022.
He also serves on the Recording Industry of Kenya (RIKE) board.
