Mr. Googz (real name Moffat Omari) is a Kenyan musician, preacher, and author who rose to fame in the late 1990s with the hit song Wasee (Githurai). Initially part of Kenya’s vibrant secular music scene under the Ogopa DJs label, he later transitioned to gospel music in 2005 and established himself as a respected figure in Kenya’s inspirational music and ministry circles.
Early Life and Education
Mr. Googz grew up in Zimmermann, Nairobi. He attended Ainsworth Primary School in Eastleigh and later studied at Highway Secondary School. His early exposure to Nairobi’s diverse urban culture influenced his musical direction, blending reggae, dancehall, and Kenyan urban beats.
Musical Career
Mr. Googz began his professional career in the late 1990s when he teamed up with fellow artist Vinnie Banton to form a duo. Together, they joined the Ogopa DJs record label, which was then shaping Kenya’s urban music industry.
In 1998, the duo released Wasee (Githurai), a tribute to the Nairobi suburb of Githurai. Featuring Mr. Lenny, the song became a national hit, cementing their place in Kenyan music history.
By 2003, Mr. Googz, Vinnie Banton, the Longombas, and Deux Vultures left Ogopa DJs and formed their own label, Bad Man Camp. However, in 2004, Googz and Vinnie Banton split to pursue solo careers.
Shift to Gospel Music
In 2005, Mr. Googz made a dramatic career turn, moving away from secular music to focus on gospel and inspirational songs. His first gospel album, His Love (2006), marked the beginning of this new chapter.
Despite the shift in genre, he retained a loyal fan base and continued to command respect in the Kenyan music scene. His transition has been praised as a demonstration of his commitment to faith and authenticity.
