Kenya Sawada, born January 28, 1965, is a Japanese film actor best known for his role as Captain Sawada in the 1994 Street Fighter movie. Although he started in Japanese productions like Hey Oilers: The Legend of Skyline, his career flourished in Hong Kong cinema, where he acted in major films including Jackie Chan’s Thunderbolt and Shinjuku Incident.
Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Kenya Sawada began his acting career in the early 1990s. He gained international recognition when Capcom cast him in the Street Fighter film adaptation as part of a promotional deal. Although Capcom originally wanted him to play Ryu, his limited English proficiency at the time led to a different role. Despite that, Sawada’s portrayal became iconic, and he reprised the character in the arcade and home versions of Street Fighter: The Movie. He also contributed to Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie as a script coordinator and was a writer for Street Fighter II V.
Sawada’s filmography spans over three decades, with roles in Devils on the Doorstep, Ip Man: The Final Fight, Hidden Man, and The Great Magician. Though he rarely appears in Japanese productions, his bilingual capabilities and martial arts roles have made him a regular in East Asian cinema, particularly in Hong Kong action films.
Sawada has also appeared in television, including minor roles in Tokugawa Buraichō and Itoshi no Deka, as well as in video games where he portrayed Captain Sawada in both arcade and console adaptations.
