Edward Katumba Wamala (born 19 November 1956) is a Ugandan four-star general, politician, and cabinet minister. He currently serves as the Minister of Works and Transport in Uganda, a position he has held since 14 December 2019. A long-serving military officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Katumba has also been central to Uganda’s policing, defence, and peacekeeping operations for over four decades.

Military and Political Career
- Began as an officer in the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) before transitioning into the National Resistance Army (NRA) in 1986 when it took power.
- 2000–2001: Commanded UPDF forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during regional conflicts.
- 2001–2005: Inspector General of Police (IGP), the first serving UPDF officer to head the Uganda Police Force.
- 2005–2013: Commander of the UPDF Land Forces, based at Bombo Military Barracks.
- Oversaw Uganda’s peacekeeping operations in Somalia (AMISOM).
- 2013–2017: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), the highest military position in Uganda.
- 2017–2019: Minister of State for Works.
- 2019–present: Cabinet Minister of Works and Transport.
On 23 May 2013, he was promoted to the rank of full general (four-star).
Assassination Attempt
On 1 June 2021, while traveling through Kisaasi, a suburb of Kampala, Katumba Wamala survived an assassination attempt:
- Attackers: Four armed gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.
- Casualties:
- His daughter Brenda Wamala Nantongo was killed.
- His driver Haruna Kayondo also died.
- Injuries: Katumba sustained gunshot wounds in both shoulders but survived.
- Investigations: Ugandan authorities later announced the perpetrators were Islamist extremists linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and the Islamic State, trained in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Response: President Yoweri Museveni condemned the attackers as “pigs who do not value life.”
