Government Cracks Down on Reckless River Crossings After Tragic Deaths

Residents rushing to rescue ten people swept away by floods while attempting to cross river Muswii in Makueni County

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced significant measures to combat the hazardous behavior of drivers crossing swollen rivers, following a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of eight individuals in Makueni County. This stern response targets drivers who disregard the safety of passengers by attempting to traverse dangerous waters, especially during the current rainy season that has severely flooded parts of Kenya.

Murkomen emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring infrastructure damaged by the floods to ensure safe travel. He also urged motorists to avoid crossing swollen rivers, stating that those found endangering lives would face legal consequences. The announcement came after a distressing event where a lorry was swept away while crossing River Muswii, leading to multiple drownings and ongoing search and rescue operations at River Muatineni.

Additionally, the Kenya Meteorological Department has forecasted more intense rainfall over the next few days, particularly affecting regions like the Rift Valley, Nairobi area, and the Coastal region. The government, through spokesperson Issac Mwaura, has advised residents to be vigilant for potential floods and flash floods, underscoring the importance of taking safety precautions during this perilous period.
