GMHBA Stadium: History and Features of Geelong’s Iconic Kardinia Park

GMHBA Stadium, located in Geelong, Australia, is one of the country’s most iconic sports venues. Traditionally known as Kardinia Park, the stadium has a long history that dates back to the 19th century. With a current capacity of 34,074, the stadium is home to Geelong FC, one of the most revered Australian football clubs. Over the years, GMHBA Stadium has undergone extensive renovations, transforming it into a modern venue that still retains its historical charm.

A Rich History of Kardinia Park

Kardinia Park has been the heart of Geelong’s sports culture for decades. The stadium’s history goes back to the late 1800s when it was originally a venue for community sporting events. The Geelong Football Club, which moved to Kardinia Park in 1941, has called this venue home ever since, though it wasn’t always the permanent home before that. The previous ground, Corio Oval, was taken by the army during World War II, prompting the club’s relocation.

The stadium has undergone several name changes, reflecting its ongoing development. Originally known as Shell Stadium from 1999-2001, it was then renamed Baytec Stadium, Skilled Stadium (2001-2011), and Simonds Stadium (2012-2017) before becoming GMHBA Stadium, thanks to a naming rights deal. These changes signify the growth and transformation of the stadium into a major Australian venue.

Modern Renovations and Design

The stadium’s most significant transformation occurred between 2003 and 2019, during which time several upgrades were implemented in multiple phases. These renovations saw the construction of new grandstands on the south and west sides of the stadium. Some older sections of the stadium were demolished, making way for modern structures that included new floodlight masts, which are now one of the stadium’s most noticeable features.

The new design preserves the original oval shape of the stadium while providing modern amenities for both players and fans. The fully covered roof is another standout feature of the venue, making it more comfortable for spectators during all weather conditions.

Home of Geelong FC and More

While GMHBA Stadium is best known as the home of the Geelong FC, it also hosts other teams from the A-League, including Melbourne Victory FC and Western United FC. The stadium’s versatility allows it to serve as a venue for multiple sports, including Australian Rules Football, rugby, and soccer.

Aside from regular sporting events, GMHBA Stadium is also used for major concerts and entertainment events, cementing its place as a key venue in the region. Its combination of historical significance and modern design makes it an important fixture in Geelong’s community.

With a blend of historical charm and contemporary features, the stadium remains a central part of the local community and a venue of choice for major sporting and entertainment events in Australia.
