Wakiso District Uganda is one of the most populous districts in the country, partly surrounding Kampala, the capital. The district headquarters are in Wakiso Town, but the area also includes Kira Town, Uganda’s second largest city, as well as Entebbe, which became a city in 2020. With a population of 2.9 million (2020), Wakiso is the fastest-growing district in Uganda, experiencing rapid urbanization, economic expansion, and cultural importance.
Its strategic location, bordering Lake Victoria and housing Entebbe International Airport, makes it a major entry point into Uganda. Wakiso is also rich in Buganda cultural heritage, wildlife attractions, and religious landmarks.
Location and Administration
Wakiso District is located in the Central Region. It borders:
- Nakaseke and Luweero Districts (north)
- Mukono District (east)
- Kalangala District (south)
- Mpigi District (southwest)
- Mityana District (northwest)
Administrative units include Kyadondo County, Busiro County, and several towns such as Nansana, Kira, Gayaza, Ssisa, Kakiri, and Wakiso Town. Entebbe City was part of Wakiso until its elevation to city status in 2020.
