Sembabule District Uganda is located in the Central Region, with its administrative headquarters in Sembabule town. Created in 1997 after being carved out of Masaka District, Sembabule is largely rural and characterized by long dry spells that affect crop farming but still support strong cattle ranching and dairy farming.
With an estimated population of 219,600 (2012), Sembabule is home to urban centers such as Lwemiyaga and Ntuusi. Its economy thrives on agriculture, supported by livestock keeping, ranching, and small-scale crop cultivation.

Economy and Agriculture
Agriculture is the backbone of the Sembabule District Uganda economy. Due to its semi-arid climate, cattle ranching and dairy farming dominate. Many herds are kept on ranches, making Sembabule one of Uganda’s leading cattle-keeping areas.
Key crops include:
- Bananas (sweet & matooke)
- Cassava, potatoes, and yams
- Maize and millet
- Groundnuts and peas
- Mangoes, pineapples, and passion fruits
In recent years, fish farming has also been introduced, with produce supplied to Masaka, Kampala, and Rakai.
Cultural and Historical Significance
Sembabule is notable for the Bigo bya Mugenyi archaeological site, an ancient settlement dating back to the late Iron Age (1200–1000 BC). Excavations here uncovered iron blades, decorated pottery, cattle dung, and post-holes, pointing to the district’s long history of human settlement and cattle domestication.
