Bugiri District Uganda is located in the Busoga sub-region of Eastern Uganda. The district is named after its chief town Bugiri, which also serves as the administrative headquarters. With a population of 426,800 (2012 estimate), Bugiri has grown rapidly due to its strategic location and fertile agricultural land.
Bugiri District was carved from Iganga District, and in July 2010, part of its southern territory became Namayingo District. Its landscape is marked by rolling hills and extensive swamps, lying between the Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga drainage basins, making it an important agricultural and fishing hub.
Location and Geography
Bugiri District shares borders with:
- Namutumba and Butaleja Districts (north)
- Tororo District (northeast)
- Busia District (east)
- Namayingo District (southeast)
- Mayuge District (southwest)
- Bugweri District (west)
Bugiri town lies about 77 km east of Jinja, the largest city in Busoga. The district’s topography is predominantly flat with rich wetland ecosystems, though this has increased road construction and maintenance costs.
Population
Bugiri District’s population has grown significantly:
- 1991: 171,300
- 2002: 237,400
- 2012: 426,800
With an annual growth rate of 6.1%, Bugiri is one of the fastest-growing districts in Uganda.
Economy and Agriculture
Agriculture is the backbone of Bugiri’s economy, with most households depending on subsistence and commercial farming. Major crops include:
- Matooke
- Cassava
- Maize
- Millet
- Coffee
- Sorghum
- Beans and peas
- Sweet bananas and sweet potatoes
- Lowland rice
The Kibimba Rice Scheme, managed by Tilda Uganda Limited (TUL), is a major commercial farming project in the district, supporting both corporate farming and smallholder out-growers.
Fishing is another important activity, supported by the district’s access to Lake Victoria and surrounding wetlands. In its peak years, Bugiri produced over 40 metric tonnes of fish daily, with 75% of exports going to Western Europe. However, unregulated fishing has severely reduced fish stocks, impacting livelihoods.
People and Leadership
Notable individuals from Bugiri District include:
- Phillip Wafula Oguttu, former MP for Bukhooli County Central.
- Frederick Douglas Mwanja Mukisa, former State Minister for Fisheries (2006–2011).
