The Galton Fenzi Memorial Stone

The Galton Fenzi Memorial Stone, located near the GPO (General Post Office) at the junction of Kenyatta Avenue and Koinange Street in Nairobi, Kenya, is a historical monument often overlooked by passersby. Known colloquially as Point Zero, this modest structure holds great significance in the history and development of Nairobi and Kenya as a whole.

Historical Significance

The Galton Fenzi stone marks the central reference point from which distances between Nairobi and various destinations across Kenya and beyond were measured. These include major cities and towns such as Mombasa, Athi River, Kajiado, Nanyuki, and Moyale, as well as regional cities like Juba, Khartoum, Cairo, and Dar es Salaam.

The monument symbolizes the meticulous planning and infrastructure development that went into Nairobi’s early growth. As the city evolved into Kenya’s capital, Point Zero served as a practical anchor for mapping and transportation logistics.

Galton Fenzi: The Man Behind the Monument

The monument was erected in honor of Lionel Douglas Galton-Fenzi, an Englishman who played a pivotal role in Kenya’s automotive history. Galton-Fenzi:

  • Founded the Royal East Africa Automobile Association (now the Automobile Association of Kenya) in 1919. This organization remains a cornerstone of driving services in Kenya, offering driving lessons, insurance, training, and other automotive services.
  • Drove the first car from Nairobi to Mombasa in 1926, an impressive feat during an era when road infrastructure was rudimentary at best. This journey highlighted the potential for road travel and spurred the development of better road networks in Kenya.

Following his death in 1937, the memorial stone was erected in 1939 to commemorate his contributions. Sometimes referred to as the Nairobi Military Stone, it continues to stand as a tribute to his pioneering spirit.

Location and Accessibility

The stone is located in a prominent spot near the GPO building, a bustling area frequented by people visiting the Huduma Centre in the Teleposta Building. Despite its historical importance, many may pass by without realizing the monument’s legacy and connection to Kenya’s transport history.

Past and Present

In the 1940s, the Galton Fenzi Memorial Stone was a focal point for mapping and logistics, emphasizing its significance in Nairobi’s urban planning. Today, while its practical purpose has diminished with advancements in technology and infrastructure, it remains an important historical marker, symbolizing the growth of Nairobi as a central hub in East Africa.

The monument stands as a quiet reminder of the individuals and milestones that shaped Kenya’s transport network and urban development. For those who take a moment to appreciate it, the Galton Fenzi stone offers a glimpse into the pioneering era of Kenya’s history.
