Early Life

Theodore John Leonsis was born on January 8, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York, to a family of Greek immigrant millworkers and parents who worked as a waiter and a secretary. As a young boy, Ted earned extra money by mowing lawns, and his high school guidance counselor predicted a future for him in grocery store work. However, while mowing the lawn of Jim Shannon, a wealthy stockbroker and Georgetown alumnus, Ted’s life took a pivotal turn. Shannon was impressed by Ted and helped him gain admission to Georgetown University, where he graduated from Lowell High School.
Ted became the first in his family to attend college, majoring in American Studies and graduating at the top of his class in 1977. After college, he moved back to Lowell, Massachusetts, and started working for Wang Laboratories as a communications manager and for Harris Corporation as a marketing executive.
LIST Magazine
At 25, Ted left Harris Corporation and moved to Florida to start his first business venture, “LIST,” a technology magazine focusing on personal computing. He raised $1 million in capital with his partner, Vicent Pica. The magazine’s first issue was published in 1982 and was a huge success, selling $50,000 worth of copies on newsstands. In 1984, Ted sold the company to Thomson Reuters for $40 million, netting $20 million for himself.
AOL
Ted Leonsis is best known as an internet industry pioneer who played a crucial role in transforming AOL (America Online) into a global phenomenon. In 1994, his media company, Redgate Communications, was acquired by AOL. Ted served as a senior executive at AOL for the next 13 years.
