Simba Arati Invites President Ruto to Rejoin ODM and Lead Party in 2027

Kisii Governor Simba Arati has stirred political debate after publicly urging President William Ruto to return to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) — the party he helped form nearly two decades ago. Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kisii on Monday, October 20, Arati boldly invited the Head of State to take up leadership within ODM and become its presidential flagbearer in 2027.

Arati, who serves as ODM’s Deputy Party Leader, cited Ruto’s recent remarks acknowledging the party’s strong legacy and unity as a sign of goodwill and continuity. He emphasized that Ruto’s comeback would be in line with the vision of the late Raila Odinga, who led the party for 20 years and played a pivotal role in shaping modern Kenyan politics.

“The President said he will ensure ODM remains strong. Mheshimiwa Ruto, you were among its founders. How I wish you could return to your former party,” Arati declared before a cheering crowd. “If you came back, you would automatically be our presidential candidate, fulfilling the dream that Baba had for this movement.”

Arati reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding Raila Odinga’s political legacy, describing the former Prime Minister as a “guiding light” whose leadership inspired generations of Kenyan leaders. He further stated that ODM would not remain in opposition indefinitely, insisting the party is preparing to contest the 2027 General Election with renewed vigor and unity.

ODM was formed following the 2005 constitutional referendum, when Ruto and Raila opposed a proposed draft constitution. Their alliance at the time birthed the iconic Orange symbol, representing the “No” campaign that evolved into the powerful political movement now known as ODM.

Arati’s comments are expected to spark fresh debate within ODM, as the party navigates a leadership transition following Raila Odinga’s death. While Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and other senior officials have called for unity, internal disagreements remain over the future direction of the party.

Known for his fiery political style, Arati concluded his address by reaffirming his determination to face any political challenge that comes his way, saying he is “ready to cross the river filled with crocodiles” to defend the ideals of ODM and Raila’s legacy.
