Nyandiwa, Homa Bay County: The Social Health Authority (SHA) has dismissed claims that it disbursed Ksh20 million to a ghost hospital in Nyandiwa, Homa Bay County, confirming that Nyandiwa Hospital has been operational since the 1970s. Critics raised concerns on social media after a list of SHA disbursements showed the hospital had received Ksh20 million, accompanied by photos suggesting the facility was abandoned.
SHA CEO Mercy Mwangangi refuted the claims, insisting the hospital is legitimate and actively serving the community. She explained that the Ksh20 million allocation was part of accumulated claims processed under SHA’s strict verification and payment protocols. The facility has received Ksh751,504 under Primary Health Care (PHC) and Ksh82,080,706 under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) since October 2024, covering services such as inpatient, outpatient, surgical, maternity, dialysis, mental wellness, rehabilitation, medical imaging, and haematology/oncology.
The viral photos circulating online, showing a deserted hospital, were clarified by SHA as representing an incomplete project built by a previous County administration. This site has never been contracted by SHA and holds no transacting rights.
Mwangangi criticized the misreporting, emphasizing that all SHA disbursements undergo rigorous verification to protect public funds and support health service delivery. SHA also confirmed that Ksh3.4 billion has been disbursed nationwide to all contracted health facilities.
The Authority urged the public and media to verify information before sharing, stressing the importance of accurate reporting in safeguarding public resources and strengthening healthcare services across Kenya.
