Rev. Dr. Joy Adava Makokha was a remarkable woman whose life was rooted in faith, education, and tireless service. Born on September 14, 1941, in Vihiga, Kenya, she lived a life dedicated to God, her family, and her community. She passed away on August 3, 2010, at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy that transcends borders.
A Scholar and Educator
Dr. Makokha was not only a revered spiritual leader but also a distinguished academic. She pursued higher education at The Ohio State University, where she later served as a professor. Her academic journey broke barriers for African women and made her a role model for many aspiring scholars.
Ministry and Mission
Alongside her beloved husband, Right Reverend Bishop Dr. Byrum Makokha, Rev. Dr. Joy Makokha served as Bishopess over the Church of God in East Africa, Kenya. Together, they led with unwavering devotion, nurturing congregations across Kenya and engaging in impactful missions. While in the United States, she worshiped with the Meadowpark Church of God in Columbus, Ohio, building lasting bonds with the local and international Christian community.
A Life of Love and Family
Dr. Makokha’s warmth extended beyond her ministry. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was survived by her loving husband Bishop Dr. Byrum Makokha who passed on in 2021; her son Stafford Makokha curently staying at Ibubi; daughters Cherie (Stephen Hunt), Unis (Rocky Maddex), Esther (Pastor Samuel Jefferson), and Agnes Makokha. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, and numerous brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reuben and Mikali Adego, a beloved daughter, and several siblings.
