Necessary Noize was a pioneering Kenyan hip hop group formed in October 2000, recognized for its socially conscious lyrics and influential sound. The group originally comprised Nazizi Hirji (MC and singer), Wyre (singer), and Bamzigi (rapper). Bamzigi later exited the group due to personal and label-related disputes, leaving Nazizi and Wyre to continue as the core members.
Origins and Rise
The group debuted with a self-titled album Necessary Noize (2000) under Audio Vault Studios (later Blu Zebra), featuring early hits such as Clang Clang and La Di Da. Their mix of hip hop, reggae, and R&B immediately resonated with Kenya’s youth.
By 2004, they released their critically acclaimed second album, Necessary Noize II: Kenyan Gal, Kenyan Boy, which produced regional hits including Kenyan Gal, Kenyan Boy and Bless My Room. Their lyrics addressed social issues such as HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, and politics, making them both popular entertainers and cultural commentators.
Collaborations
Necessary Noize collaborated with major East African artists, expanding their influence beyond Kenya. Together with Ugandan ragga star Bebe Cool, they formed the East Africa Bashment Crew, blending dancehall and hip hop to wide acclaim.
The group also worked with Gangwe Mobb from Tanzania on the hit Tunajirusha. Their debut album featured guest appearances from Mizchif (Zimbabwe), Jerry Doobiez (K-South), and Nyota Ndogo.
Both Nazizi and Wyre pursued solo careers while still performing as Necessary Noize, further cementing their individual and group legacies.
