Malaha Junction Crash Leaves 14 Dead

The Malaha junction crash has left at least 14 people dead and 30 others injured after a long-distance trailer reportedly lost control along the Kitale–Webuye highway in Bungoma County. The deadly incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, turning a routine night into a scene of devastation.

According to police and witnesses, the trailer was travelling from Kitale towards Webuye at around 2am when it veered off the road. It then rammed into private vehicles and motorcycles parked along the roadside, as well as pedestrians and boda boda operators waiting nearby.

Authorities indicated that the sequence of events may have begun with a head-on collision between two motorcycles. As a result, a crowd gathered at the scene. Moments later, the oncoming trailer crashed into the bystanders, dramatically increasing the number of casualties.

The impact scattered wreckage across the highway and left several victims trapped beneath vehicles. Emergency responders and residents worked through the night to pull survivors from the debris. However, the scale of destruction complicated rescue efforts.

Webuye East Sub-County Police Commander Rosemary Odeke confirmed the Malaha junction crash and said investigations are ongoing. She noted that officers are still establishing the full circumstances of the accident and verifying the exact number of casualties.

Police suspect the trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Consequently, authorities have launched a search while examining whether mechanical failure, speeding, or driver fatigue contributed to the incident.

The injured were rushed to Webuye County Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were transferred to the same facility’s mortuary pending identification and postmortem examinations.

Road safety concerns continue to mount along major highways linking western Kenya. The Kitale–Webuye corridor serves as a key transport route for cargo trucks and passenger vehicles. However, night-time visibility challenges and roadside parking often increase risks.

In recent years, heavy commercial vehicles have featured prominently in fatal crashes across the country. Therefore, calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved highway design have intensified.

Why This Matters

The Malaha junction crash underscores ongoing road safety vulnerabilities on Kenya’s highways. High-speed trailers sharing space with motorcycles and pedestrians create conditions where small incidents escalate into mass-casualty events.

What Happens Next

Police are expected to conduct mechanical inspections on the trailer and review traffic camera footage where available. Authorities will also trace the driver as investigations continue. Meanwhile, families await identification of victims and further updates from law enforcement.
