Joseph Aoun, officially Joseph Aoun (born January 10, 1964, Sin el Fil, Lebanon), is a Lebanese military officer and politician who became the President of Lebanon in January 2025. A Maronite Christian by birth, he is not related to former president Michel Aoun.
Aoun entered the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in 1983, during the Lebanese Civil War (1975–90), a time of national fragmentation and foreign intervention. He steadily advanced through the ranks, becoming known for his discipline and pragmatic leadership. His career included several professional military education programs abroad, particularly in the United States, where he undertook counterterrorism training in 2008.
In 2015, as a brigadier general, Aoun was given command of the 9th Infantry Brigade, stationed in southern Lebanon, a region heavily influenced by Hezbollah. The following year, his brigade was redeployed to the northeastern border with Syria, where they faced spillover violence from the Syrian civil war and the growing threat of the Islamic State (ISIS).
Leadership of the Lebanese Armed Forces
In 2017, Joseph Aoun was appointed commander of the LAF, a post he held until 2025. His leadership was tested in October 2019, when Lebanon was rocked by mass anti-government protests. The army deployed nationwide to protect infrastructure and prevent violent clashes. Aoun, however, avoided heavy crackdowns, reportedly telling political leaders that the military could not suppress a “revolution of the hungry.” This stance helped preserve the army’s reputation as a relatively neutral institution in Lebanon’s polarized political landscape.
During the 2024 Israel–Lebanon war, Aoun oversaw joint operations between the LAF, Hezbollah, and Syrian forces to counter incursions by Israeli troops and contain ISIS-linked militants along the border. His management of the army during this volatile period strengthened his domestic credibility and his image as a figure who prioritized national stability over partisan politics.
Presidency of Lebanon
Following the end of Michel Aoun’s presidency in 2022, Lebanon faced a prolonged political deadlock, with parliament unable to elect a new leader. The devastation caused by Israel’s 2024 invasion of Lebanon created pressure to break the impasse. With the support of the United States, Saudi Arabia, and key Lebanese factions, Joseph Aoun was elected president in January 2025.
In his inaugural address, he described his election as “the greatest medal” of his life and pledged to rebuild the country, restore stability, and place all armed groups under state authority. Soon after, he appointed Nawaf Salam, a prominent judge at the International Court of Justice, to form a government as prime minister, despite opposition from Hezbollah.
As President of Lebanon, Aoun is widely regarded as a neutral and trusted leader. His presidency coincides with efforts to secure southern Lebanon under United Nations Resolution 1701 and to stabilize the nation after years of political paralysis, economic collapse, and conflict.
