Duma Gideon Boko (born December 31, 1969, Mahalapye, Botswana) is a lawyer, human rights advocate, and politician who became the president of Botswana in 2024. His victory ended the nearly 60-year dominance of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), marking one of the most significant political transitions in the country’s history. Boko is also the long-time president of the Botswana National Front (BNF) and leader of the opposition coalition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).
Early life, education, and career
Raised in Mahalapye, Boko studied law at the University of Botswana (LLB, 1993) before earning a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School (1995). He lectured at the University of Botswana (1993–2003) while practicing law, specializing in human rights and public interest litigation. His high-profile legal work included defending the Basarwa (San) people in a landmark land rights case (2004–06). Boko also engaged in civil society, serving as chair of the Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS. He married attorney Kaone Mokganedi in 2015.
Political rise
Boko entered politics through the BNF, and despite early legal challenges to his candidacy, he became party president in 2010. In 2012, he spearheaded the creation of the UDC coalition, uniting opposition groups under one banner. Although unsuccessful in the 2014 and 2019 elections, Boko positioned the UDC as Botswana’s strongest opposition force.
By 2024, with unemployment soaring to nearly 28 percent and the diamond-dependent economy slowing, public appetite for change grew. Boko campaigned on job creation, doubling the minimum wage, universal health coverage, and diversifying the economy through tourism and agriculture. His critique of BDP’s “grand scheme of self-enrichment” resonated with voters.
Presidency
In the October 30, 2024 elections, the UDC more than doubled its seats in the National Assembly and secured the presidency for Boko. He was sworn in on November 1, 2024, and held a large public inauguration in Gaborone on November 8, praising his predecessor Mokgweetsi Masisi for ensuring a peaceful transfer of power. As president, Boko has prioritized tackling supply shortages, youth unemployment, and expanding social protections.
