The death of Dr. Robert Ouko, Kenya’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, remains one of the most controversial and unresolved cases in the country’s history. His remains were housed at Lee Funeral Home, and the official narrative presented by government pathologist Dr. David Kaviti in 1990 has been widely contested and criticized.
Dr. Ouko’s death was initially ruled a suicide by Dr. Kaviti. He testified before the commission investigating the minister’s death, asserting that Dr. Ouko had first attempted to hang himself. According to Dr. Kaviti, the minister’s broken leg was a result of falling during the failed hanging attempt. He further claimed that after this unsuccessful suicide attempt, Dr. Ouko shot himself and then set his body on fire.
This explanation, however, raised numerous questions and faced substantial skepticism from the public and other investigators. The implausibility of the scenario described by Dr. Kaviti was apparent to many, leading to widespread disbelief in the official findings. Critics argued that the broken leg, gunshot, and subsequent burning of the body pointed more convincingly to foul play rather than a complex series of self-inflicted injuries culminating in suicide.
The skepticism surrounding Dr. Kaviti’s testimony intensified over the years. In 2004, in his later years, Dr. Kaviti denounced his previous evidence and theory. This retraction added fuel to the already rampant speculation and controversy. Despite this significant turnabout, many believed that Dr. Kaviti should have faced professional consequences for his initial testimony. Calls were made for his removal from the medical practitioners’ register and for him to be prohibited from practicing medicine due to the perceived mishandling of the case.
The death of Dr. Ouko has been linked to high-level political intrigue and corruption, with various theories suggesting that his demise was orchestrated by powerful individuals within the government. The complexity and high-profile nature of the case have meant that it remains a topic of interest and debate in Kenya.
