Judith Nyambura Mwangi (born 30 April 1986), popularly known as Avril, is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur. Recognized for her soulful vocals and versatility, she has become one of East Africa’s most admired performers. Avril first rose to fame under Ogopa Deejays, one of Kenya’s leading music production houses, before transitioning into a career that spans Afropop, R&B, and acting.
Over the years, she has released notable singles such as “Mama,” “Kitu Kimoja,” “Chokoza,” and “Hakuna Yule.” As an actress, she is best remembered for her role as Miss B’Have in the MTV drama series Shuga: Love, Sex, Money (2012). Early Life and Education
Avril was born in Nakuru, Kenya, on 30 April 1986, and raised in the Rift Valley region. While in high school, she was deeply involved in music and drama festivals, showing early artistic talent.
In 2005, she participated in the Jaza Lorry initiative, where she met Emmanuel Banda, a talent manager with Ogopa Deejays, who encouraged her to pursue music. Although hesitant at first, Avril later joined the University of Nairobi in 2006 to study design. During her second year, she fully embraced music, signing with Ogopa Deejays and recording her debut single “Mama” in 2009.
Music Career
Avril’s breakthrough came with her debut single “Mama,” followed by features such as Colonel Mustapha’s “Mtaani Dot Com” and the remix of AY’s “Leo” in 2010. She gained continental recognition with the collaborative hit “Chokoza” alongside Marya, which became a radio sensation in Kenya.
In 2012, she released “Kitu Kimoja”, followed by “Hakuna Yule” in 2013, both of which established her as a solo powerhouse. In 2014, Avril collaborated with Boomba Boyz on “Piga Kengele”, expanding her fan base further.

Avril made her acting debut in the acclaimed drama series Shuga: Love, Sex, Money (2012), playing Miss B’Have, a celebrity singer who championed monogamy. Her role highlighted issues around HIV/AIDS awareness, earning praise across Africa.
She went on to appear in Noose of Gold (2013–2014), Skandals Kibao, Sumu la Penzi, Varshita, Auntie Boss!, and the football drama Pepeta (2022). In 2023, she played Deborah in the crime drama Faithless, cementing her status as one of Kenya’s top screen talents.
