Allan Kilavuka (born 1970s) is a Kenyan businessman and corporate executive, currently serving as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Airways (KQ), the national airline of Kenya. He is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential aviation leaders, credited with steering Kenya Airways toward financial recovery while championing broader progress in the continent’s airline industry.
Early Life and Education
Kilavuka was born in Kenya, where he attended local primary and secondary schools. He later joined the University of Nairobi, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting.
He pursued further studies abroad, earning a Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. In addition, he attended several professional courses in advanced management, executive leadership, and financial management at the Crotonville Leadership Institute in Westchester County, New York, owned by General Electric (GE).
Career Beginnings
Kilavuka began his professional career with Deloitte East Africa, before joining General Electric (GE) where he spent over a decade in leadership roles across sub-Saharan Africa. His time at GE gave him extensive experience in business management, operations, and strategy within diverse African markets.
CEO of Jambojet
In January 2019, Kilavuka was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Jambojet, Kenya Airways’ low-cost subsidiary. His tenure focused on expansion, efficiency, and customer experience, positioning Jambojet as one of the leading budget carriers in East Africa. He served in this role until March 2020.
CEO of Kenya Airways
On April 1, 2020, Allan Kilavuka succeeded Sebastian Mikosz as CEO of Kenya Airways. His appointment came at a turbulent time, as the airline faced the financial and operational crisis brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of his earliest measures was to enforce a 25% pay cut for executives and the suspension of board allowances to conserve cash. These tough but necessary decisions reflected his pragmatic approach to leadership during crisis management.
Under his stewardship, Kenya Airways gradually reduced its annual losses, improved cost efficiencies, and positioned itself for profitability. By 2024, the airline was showing signs of transitioning from a loss-making entity to a profit-making enterprise.
The airline’s board of directors extended his contract twice: first in 2023 to 2026, and again in June 2024 for three more years, a reflection of confidence in his leadership.
Regional and International Recognition
Beyond Kenya Airways, Kilavuka has emerged as a continental leader in aviation. In November 2024, he was elected Chairperson of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) during its 56th Annual General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt. His appointment was seen as a milestone for Kenya Airways and African aviation integration.
In May 2024, he received the African Aviation Leadership Award from African Aviation Magazine, honoring his role in advancing Africa’s aviation sector.
