Alexandra Ndolo (born 1986) is a Kenyan fencer and sports administrator who made history as Kenya’s first-ever representative in fencing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Although born and raised in Germany, Ndolo switched her sporting nationality in 2022 to compete under the Kenyan flag, marking a milestone in the nation’s sporting history.
Early Life and Background
Ndolo was born to a Polish mother and a Kenyan father in Germany. Growing up in a multicultural environment, she pursued fencing as a teenager and developed into a top competitor on the European circuit.
Career with Germany
Before her switch of allegiance, Ndolo represented Germany in international fencing competitions from 2013 to 2017. During this period, she achieved significant success, including:
- Silver medal at the 2017 European Fencing Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.
- Bronze medal at the 2019 European Fencing Championships in Germany.
Her results established her as one of Europe’s top épée fencers and built her reputation as a world-class athlete.
Switch to Kenya and Olympic Qualification
In 2022, Ndolo changed her sporting nationality to Kenya with the aim of promoting fencing in Africa and honoring her paternal heritage. She became co-founder and board member of the Kenya Fencing Federation, playing a key role in growing the sport domestically.
She helped establish fencing schools in Nairobi and facilitated scholarship programmes for young Kenyan fencers in South Africa, laying the foundation for the sport’s future in the country.
In 2024, she qualified for the Paris Olympic Games as Kenya’s sole fencer. Though she did not win a medal, her participation was historic, as it placed Kenya on the global fencing map and inspired young athletes to pursue the sport.
Legacy and Impact
Ndolo’s decision to represent Kenya marked a turning point for fencing in East Africa. Beyond her athletic achievements, she has become a pioneer in sports development, ensuring that fencing—once considered a distant, elite sport—takes root in Kenya.
By combining her international experience with grassroots efforts, she continues to inspire a new generation of fencers in Kenya and beyond.
