Requirements for Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL) in Kenya

To apply for an ATPL in Kenya, applicants must meet specific criteria established by the KCAA. The ATPL allows pilots to operate as the pilot-in-command on aircraft with nine or more passenger seats and is crucial for those seeking to advance their careers in aviation.

    • Hold a valid and current Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and an Instrument Rating.
    • Fulfill the experience requirements for conversion of the Kenyan Military Pilot’s License to a CPL and an Instrument Rating (for rated military pilots or former rated military pilots).
    • Hold a foreign Airline Transport Pilot License or a foreign Commercial Pilot License with an Instrument Rating issued by another contracting state.
  4. Knowledge Test: Pass a knowledge test on applicable aeronautical knowledge areas related to the aircraft category and class rating sought during flight instruction.
  5. Aeronautical Experience: Meet the applicable aeronautical experience requirements before applying for the practical test.
  6. Practical Test: Pass the practical test on applicable areas of operation related to the aircraft category and class rating sought.
  7. Aircraft Type Test: Pass the required practical test for the specific aircraft type to be endorsed on the license.
  8. Instrument Rating Test: Successfully complete an Instrument Rating test.
  9. English Language Proficiency: Pass the English Language Proficiency exam and attain one of the following levels:
    • Operational Level (Level 4) – Valid for 3 years.
    • Extended Level (Level 5) – Valid for 6 years.
    • Expert Level (Level 6) – Valid for life.

ATPL Application Requirements

Applicants for the ATPL in Kenya must submit the following documentation and forms:

  5. Logbook: Certified copies of the last two pages of the personal logbook showing the latest flying experience, certified by the pilot’s supervisor with their signature and license number.
  6. Fees: Payment of the prescribed application fee of Ksh 8,000.

Renewal Requirements for Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL)

To renew an ATPL in Kenya, pilots must meet the following requirements:

    • ATPL Application Forms (renewal section):
      • Form M-PEL004-1 for ATPL (Aeroplanes)
      • Form M-PEL004-2 for ATPL (Helicopters)
    • Summary of Flying Experience Form
  2. Medical Certificate: A valid Class 1 Medical Certificate.
  3. Flying Experience: A completed summary of the flying experience form showing the required renewal hours (6 hours).
  4. Logbook: Present a certified logbook or other flight record to substantiate the required hours. Copies of the relevant logbook pages should be included in the licensing file.
  5. Fees: Payment of the prescribed renewal fee of Ksh 8,000 for those below 40 years and Ksh 4,000 for those above 40 years.
