Early Life and Education

Agnes Muthama Kavindu was born in Ngonda Village, Matungulu, in Machakos County, in the early 1960s. Her upbringing was grounded in strong Christian values and community service, traits that later shaped her leadership approach.

She began her primary education at Ngonda Primary School in 1969 and completed her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1975. She then joined a local secondary school within Machakos, where she completed her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1979.

After dedicating several years to family responsibilities, farming, and community service, Kavindu decided to further her education later in life. In 2018, she enrolled at the Outreach International Bible College, where she pursued theological studies and graduated the same year with a degree in Biblical Studies.

Her faith-based education provided her with the foundation for her dual calling — ministry and politics — allowing her to blend spirituality with service.

Career Background

Before joining politics, Agnes Muthama built a career around religious ministry and community development. After completing secondary school, she spent years working within her local community in Machakos County, focusing on farming and faith-based activities.

Her strong spiritual calling led her to become a preacher and gospel minister, and from 2010 to 2017, she hosted a popular radio program on Biblia Husema Broadcasting Studios, where she reached thousands of Kenyans through sermons and counseling sessions.

In 2018, she was appointed Director of the Tanathi Water Service Board, where she played a pivotal role in water management and infrastructure projects across Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, and Kajiado counties.

During this same period, she was appointed to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Taskforce (2018–2020), contributing to the national dialogue and reforms aimed at strengthening unity, governance, and devolution in Kenya.

Her work in governance and public policy positioned her as a strong advocate for transparency, equity, and grassroots empowerment — values she would later carry into the political sphere.

Political Career

Agnes Muthama’s entry into politics was marked by resilience and perseverance. Her first attempt came in the 2017 general election, where she contested for the Machakos County Woman Representative seat on a Jubilee Party ticket. Although unsuccessful, the experience strengthened her political resolve.

Her breakthrough arrived in 2021 when a by-election was held following the death of Senator Boniface Kabaka. Running on a Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya ticket, Kavindu campaigned on a platform centered on service delivery, good governance, and women’s empowerment.

On March 18, 2021, she won the by-election decisively, securing 104,352 votes, far ahead of her closest competitor from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who garnered 19,726 votes. She was subsequently sworn in as Senator for Machakos County, becoming one of the few women to serve in the Senate since its inception.

In the 2022 general election, she successfully defended her seat under the Wiper Party, reinforcing her status as a key political figure in Eastern Kenya.

In the Senate, Senator Kavindu serves in critical committees, including the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee, where she oversees the use of county resources, and the Senate Business Committee, which coordinates legislative priorities.

Her work in these committees has earned her recognition as a voice for accountability and gender equality in governance.

Family Life

Agnes Muthama is known for her humility and strong family values. She was formerly married to Johnstone Muthama, a prominent businessman and politician, though the two have since separated. Despite the personal challenges, she remains focused on public service, often emphasizing forgiveness, unity, and faith in her public addresses.

Her personal story has inspired many women across Kenya, symbolizing strength, resilience, and reinvention later in life.

Net Worth

While Agnes Muthama’s net worth is not publicly disclosed, her income as a Kenyan Senator reflects the official remuneration of parliamentary members.

She earns a gross monthly salary of approximately Ksh739,600, comprising:

  • Basic Salary: Ksh443,760
