Early Life and Education

Abass Sheikh Mohamed was born in 1958 in Wajir County, a region known for its arid climate and nomadic pastoralist communities. Growing up in the harsh conditions of northern Kenya instilled in him resilience, adaptability, and a strong commitment to improving livelihoods in marginalized areas.

He began his education at Wajir Primary School before joining Mandera High School, where he completed his secondary studies. Determined to further his education, Sheikh enrolled at Egerton University, where he pursued a Diploma in Ranch Management between 1984 and 1987.

In 1999, he returned to Egerton University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resource Management (1999–2001), focusing on sustainable land and livestock use in arid zones.

To enhance his professional expertise, he undertook postgraduate studies in Europe, earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Local Economic Development and an MBA in Strategic Marketing from Erasmus University, Netherlands. These qualifications gave him both technical and managerial insight into Kenya’s agricultural economy.

Career Background

Before entering politics, Abass Sheikh built an extensive career in Kenya’s livestock and agricultural finance sectors.

He began working at the Agricultural Finance Office in 1991, where he rose to the position of Branch Manager, serving until 1999. His role involved mobilizing credit for farmers and pastoralists, improving financial access in regions traditionally underserved by commercial banks.

In 2002, he became the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council (KLMC), a national organization that coordinates livestock trade and markets. Under his leadership, KLMC helped establish modern livestock marketing systems, promote value addition, and strengthen pastoralist cooperatives. Sheikh served in this role until 2012, earning recognition for his leadership and commitment to pastoral economies.

After leaving KLMC, Sheikh joined the private sector, becoming Managing Director of Red Sea Co. Ltd between 2018 and 2022, where he focused on agricultural exports and trade linkages across the Horn of Africa.

Political Career

Abass Sheikh Mohamed entered active politics in 2013, contesting and winning the Wajir East parliamentary seat under the United Republican Party (URP), part of the Jubilee Coalition. As a Member of Parliament (2013–2017), he championed issues affecting arid and semi-arid regions, particularly livestock development, water access, and education for nomadic children.

He lost his re-election bid in 2017, but his popularity and grassroots network remained strong. In 2022, Sheikh made a political comeback, this time contesting under the United Democratic Movement (UDM) ticket.

In the August 2022 General Election, he was elected Senator for Wajir County, garnering 36,201 votes against his closest rival, who received 33,580 votes.

In the Senate, Senator Abass Sheikh has become a key voice on pastoralist rights, devolution, and resource allocation, particularly advocating for counties in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs). He sits on several committees addressing agriculture, natural resources, and finance, where he continues to push for equitable development and stronger devolution frameworks.

His leadership reflects a balance between traditional knowledge and modern policy perspectives, making him a bridge between Kenya’s pastoralist communities and national governance.

Family Life

Senator Abass Sheikh is known as a family-oriented man who values faith, education, and community service. He has maintained a relatively private family life while remaining actively involved in social and charitable causes across Wajir County.

He often emphasizes the importance of education for youth in pastoral regions, advocating for expanded access to schools, vocational training, and digital learning centers in Northern Kenya.

Net Worth

While Abass Sheikh’s exact net worth remains undisclosed, his income as a Kenyan Senator provides insight into his financial standing. He earns an estimated gross monthly salary of Ksh739,600, including:
