Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Biography

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (born January 5, 1928, near Larkana, Sindh, India [now Pakistan]—died April 4, 1979, Rawalpindi, Pakistan) was a Pakistani lawyer, statesman, and politician who served as president (1971–73) and prime minister (1973–77) of Pakistan. A charismatic leader and founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Bhutto played a pivotal role in reshaping Pakistan after the 1971 war but was eventually deposed in a military coup and executed in 1979.

Born into a landed Rajput family, Bhutto studied at the University of California, Berkeley (B.A., 1950) and then at the University of Oxford, where he trained in law. After practicing in England, he returned to Pakistan in 1953, opening a law practice in Karachi. His political career began in earnest when he joined Pakistan’s delegation to the United Nations in 1957.

Bhutto rose under President Ayub Khan, serving as commerce minister and later as foreign minister (1963–66). He advocated for independence from Western alliances and forged closer ties with China. His opposition to the peace settlement with India following the 1965 Kashmir War led to his resignation. In 1967, he founded the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on a platform of “Islam is our faith, democracy is our politics, socialism is our economy.” He was imprisoned in 1968 but reemerged as a central political figure after Ayub Khan’s fall.

Following Pakistan’s 1971 defeat to India and the secession of East Pakistan (Bangladesh), Bhutto assumed leadership on December 20, 1971, becoming president. He nationalized industries, introduced land reforms, and placed emphasis on Islamization and populist policies. With the 1973 Constitution, he transitioned to the office of prime minister, retaining control over defense, foreign, and interior ministries.

By 1977, Bhutto’s popularity had declined. Despite his Pakistan People’s Party winning a majority in elections, allegations of electoral fraud led to widespread unrest. On July 5, 1977, Gen. Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq staged a coup, arresting Bhutto. Accused of orchestrating the assassination of a political rival in 1974, he was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death in March 1978. Despite international appeals for clemency, Bhutto was hanged in April 1979, at age 51.

Bhutto authored The Myth of Independence (1969) and The Great Tragedy (1971). His political dynasty endured through his daughter Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s first female prime minister, and his grandson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, current leader of the PPP.
