Winfred Mutile Yavi was born on December 31, 1999, in Ukia, Makueni County, Kenya. Yavi’s international career took off at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics, held in London, where she finished eighth in the steeplechase final, clocking a personal best time of 9:22.67. Her performance at just 17 years old was a clear indication of her potential to become a leading figure in the sport.

Her breakthrough came in 2018 when she won the bronze medal at the World Under-20 Championships. The same year, she claimed gold in the 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, marking her arrival on the world stage.

2019-2020: Building Momentum
In 2019, Yavi’s career gained momentum as she continued to showcase her talent across various competitions. She secured gold medals in the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m at the Arab Championships in Cairo, Egypt. Her success at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha further solidified her status, where she clinched gold in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase, along with a bronze in the 1500m.

The 2019 World Championships in Doha saw Yavi finishing fourth in the 3000m steeplechase, narrowly missing out on a podium finish but setting a new personal best of 9:05.68. Her determination and resilience continued to shine through, leading to more victories in subsequent years.

2021-2022: Continuing the Legacy
Yavi represented Bahrain at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, finishing 10th in the steeplechase final. Undeterred by the challenges, she returned stronger at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, once again securing a fourth-place finish with another personal best of 9:01.31.

2023: A Year of Triumph
The year 2023 marked a turning point in Yavi’s career. At the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, she claimed the gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase with a remarkable time of 8:54.29. This victory was followed by another gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, where she won both the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase events.

Her outstanding performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was the pinnacle of her career. Yavi not only won the gold medal but also set a new Olympic record of 8:52.76, showcasing her dominance on the global stage.
