Main Subsidiary

The firm’s primary subsidiary is Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., a national bank headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This makes it a citizen of South Dakota in most U.S. federal courts. It is the fourth-largest bank in the United States by total assets and one of the largest by bank deposits and market capitalization. The bank operates 8,050 branches, 13,000 automated teller machines, and 2,000 stand-alone mortgage branches. Wells Fargo is the second-largest retail mortgage originator in the U.S., servicing $1.8 trillion in home mortgages.

Historical Background

Wells Fargo operates under Charter No. 1, the first national bank charter issued in the United States. This charter was issued to the First National Bank of Philadelphia on June 20, 1863. The current Wells Fargo & Company was formed in 1998 from the merger between the original Wells Fargo & Company and Minneapolis-based Norwest Corporation. The merged company adopted the Wells Fargo name and moved its headquarters to San Francisco. The acquisition of Wachovia in 2008 expanded Wells Fargo into a coast-to-coast bank.

International Presence

Wells Fargo has international offices in major cities such as London, Dublin, Paris, Dubai, Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, and Toronto. Additionally, the company has back-office operations in India and the Philippines, employing over 20,000 staff.

Business Strategy

A key part of Wells Fargo’s business strategy is cross-selling, which involves encouraging existing customers to purchase additional banking services. This strategy led to the Wells Fargo cross-selling scandal.
