Wahu Biography

Rosemary Wahu Kagwi, popularly known as Wahu, is a celebrated Kenyan singer-songwriter, actress, former model, and entrepreneur. She is one of the pioneering female stars of Kenya’s contemporary urban music scene, rising to prominence in the early 2000s with her unique Afropop and R&B style. With multiple award-winning hits, including Sitishiki and Sweet Love, Wahu became a household name in Kenya and across Africa.

Early Life and Education

Wahu was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. She attended Hospital Hill Primary School before joining Precious Blood High School, Riruta, where she wrote her first song as a student. After high school, she pursued higher education at the University of Nairobi, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Communication. Alongside academics, she modeled and acted, showcasing her versatility even before launching her music career.


Music Career

Wahu officially began her music journey in 2000, debuting with singles such as Niangalie, Esha, and Liar. Her breakthrough came in 2005 with the release of Sitishiki, a hit that gained widespread airplay. She quickly established herself as one of Kenya’s most popular female musicians, working under the iconic Ogopa Deejays production label.

Her music style combines Afropop, R&B, and reggae influences, with relatable lyrics about love, relationships, and personal empowerment. Some of her most popular songs include Sweet Love (dedicated to her daughter Tumiso), Liar, Little Things You Do (with Bobi Wine), and her gospel release Sifa (2017).

Beyond Kenya, Wahu has performed across Africa, sharing the stage with major artists like Fally Ipupa, Nonini, Nameless, Wyre, Kleptomaniacs, and P-Unit.

Acting and Business Ventures

In addition to music, Wahu expanded into acting, landing a leading role in the Kenyan TV series Tazama. She also ventured into business, founding Afrosiri Salon in 2013, which offers spa, hair, and beauty services in Nairobi.

Wahu is married to fellow Kenyan superstar David Mathenge, better known as Nameless. The two tied the knot in 2005 and have since become Kenya’s most admired music power couple. They have three daughters, and Wahu dedicated her timeless hit Sweet Love to their first-born daughter, Tumiso.
