Introduction
The United Pan-Africanist Movement (UPAM) is a powerful, youth-led non-governmental initiative born out of a vision for a liberated, unified, and self-reliant Africa. Established in 2020, UPAM stands as one of the most influential Pan-African movements dedicated to uplifting African voices, defending African identity, and promoting socio-economic growth across the continent and its global diaspora.
Founding & Historical Background
UPAM was officially founded on April 6, 2020, at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. With lockdowns and economic collapse striking Africa hard, three visionary university students—Blessed Mukonka (Zambia), Emmanuel Kpan (Liberia), and Lord Malvin (Zimbabwe)—connected via Facebook to spark a movement of resistance, renewal, and reconstruction for Africa.
Their inspiration drew from Pan-African legends like Kwame Nkrumah, Thomas Sankara, Patrice Lumumba, and John Pombe Magufuli, whose dreams of a truly united and self-sustaining Africa remain unfinished. UPAM now carries that torch forward.
Mission and Vision
UPAM’s mission is rooted in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, aiming for an “integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens.” The organization believes in:
- African unity and sovereignty
- Youth leadership and education
- Cultural preservation
- Health and environmental sustainability
- Resistance to neo-colonialism and exploitation
Its vision is a Pan-African future shaped by solidarity, empowerment, and collective action.
The UPAM Flag – Symbolism and Designer

The official UPAM flag, designed by Nyongesa Sande from Kenya, embodies the soul of African liberation and unity:
- Red: Represents the blood of African martyrs and resistance fighters.
- Green: Stands for Africa’s richness in land, culture, and potential.
- Black: The people of Africa and the diaspora.
- Gold circle and star: Signify guidance, unity, and hope radiating from the heart of Africa.
- Map of Africa: Reflects the core identity of the Pan-African dream.
Emblem Meaning

UPAM’s emblem (seen above) further emphasizes the struggle and strength of the movement:
- A raised clenched fist at the center of Africa symbolizes resistance, unity, and Black power.
- Surrounding stars represent the solidarity of African nations, shining in a circle of liberation.
- The red circular field conveys revolution and unyielding determination.
- The word UPAM stands boldly in green below the continent, anchoring the movement’s identity.
Together, the flag and emblem serve as powerful icons of African resilience and renaissance.
