Early Life and Education

Thomas Boone Pickens Jr. was born on May 22, 1928, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. He started working as a newspaper delivery boy at age 12. The Pickens family moved to Amarillo, Texas, in the late 1930s. Pickens attended Texas A&M University on a basketball scholarship but transferred to Oklahoma State University (then Oklahoma A&M) after losing his scholarship. He graduated in 1951 with a degree in geology.

Career

Mesa Petroleum

After college, Pickens worked for Phillips Petroleum Company until 1954. In 1956, he founded Mesa Petroleum. Under his leadership, Mesa grew into one of the largest independent oil companies in the world by the early 1980s. Pickens gained national notoriety for his corporate raider activities, including successful takeovers of Pioneer Petroleum, Tenneco, and Gulf Oil.

In 1989, Pickens moved Mesa to suburban Dallas. The company faced financial difficulties and was sold in 1996. In 1997, it merged with Parker & Parsley Petroleum to form Pioneer Natural Resources.

Other Business Ventures

Following his exit from Mesa, Pickens founded the hedge fund BP Capital Management, which he closed in 2018 due to declining health. He also founded the Pickens Fuel Corporation, later renamed Clean Energy Fuels Corporation, in 2001 to promote natural gas for automobiles.

Political Activities

Pickens was actively involved in political activities, primarily supporting the Republican Party. He made significant donations to George W. Bush’s campaigns and Republican 527 organizations. He also financed the “Swift Boat” challenge against John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election.

Alternative Energy

In 2007, Pickens announced plans to construct the world’s largest wind farm. However, he abandoned the project in 2010 due to cost concerns. In 2008, he launched the Pickens Plan, advocating for a reduction in U.S. dependence on foreign energy and promoting alternative energy sources like wind and solar.

Philanthropy

Pickens was a generous philanthropist, donating over $1 billion during his lifetime. His contributions included $625 million to Oklahoma State University and various donations to humanitarian causes, such as Hurricane Katrina relief and healthcare institutions.

Personal Life and Death

Pickens was married and divorced five times. He had four children with his first wife, Lynn O’Brien. His subsequent marriages were to Beatrice Carr, Nelda Cain, Madeleine Paulson, and Toni Brinker. Pickens passed away on September 11, 2019, at his home in Dallas at the age of 91.

Mesa Vista Ranch

In 1971, Pickens purchased nearly 3,000 acres of land in Roberts County, Texas, which he expanded to 65,000 acres. The estate, known as Mesa Vista Ranch, featured a sprawling mansion, guest houses, a lodge, a lake house, a runway, and an airplane hangar. The ranch was listed for sale at $250 million and sold for $170 million in February 2023.

T. Boone Pickens’s legacy as a business magnate, philanthropist, and advocate for alternative energy is significant. His contributions to the oil industry and his efforts to promote sustainable energy resources have left a lasting impact. T Boone Pickens Net Worth
