St. Paul’s University (SPU) is a private Christian institution located in Kenya, with deep roots tracing back to the early missionary activities in East Africa. The university’s history dates back to 1888, when learning began at Frere Town near Mombasa as a divinity school to equip former slaves with Christian leadership training. Originally established as a missionary settlement by the Church Missionary Society (CMS), SPU has evolved over nearly 150 years into one of Kenya’s most respected universities.
Since its establishment, the university has grown significantly, developing strong academic and theological programs that continue to shape the region’s leadership. It was officially chartered in 2007, after 100 years of educational service, and continues to offer a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs through its diverse schools.
