The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is Kenya’s national examination administered at the end of the four-year secondary school cycle. It is overseen by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and plays a critical role in determining university placement, technical training opportunities, and career pathways for learners.
Ahead of the release of the 2025 KCSE results, KNEC has outlined a proposed grading framework that introduces clearer subject categorization, a structured subject selection model, and a defined method for computing the final mean grade. The changes aim to standardize assessment while giving candidates flexibility to maximize their performance across subjects.
Overview of the Proposed KCSE 2025 Grading Structure
Under the proposed KCSE 2025 grading system, candidates will be assessed using a combination of compulsory and elective subjects. Each subject remains assigned a unique KNEC code for registration, identification, and assessment.
The final KCSE mean grade will be calculated using seven subjects, broken down as follows:
Two compulsory subjects
Subject 1: English, Kiswahili, or Sign Language
Subject 2: Mathematics or Sign Language
Other subjects
Subject 3: Any five best-performed subjects selected from approved subject groups
The overall KCSE result will be computed by combining the scores from the first compulsory subject, the second compulsory subject, and the five best-performed subjects. This approach ensures that strong performance in elective subjects meaningfully contributes to the final grade.
Minimum Subject Requirements for KCSE 2025
According to KNEC, every KCSE candidate must register for a minimum of seven subjects, including the compulsory subjects. However, candidates are encouraged to register for eight or nine subjects to improve grading flexibility and increase the chances of a stronger mean score.
Subject selection is guided by clearly defined groups:
From Group I
Candidates must take all three subjects with code numbers 101, 102, and either 121 (Option A) or 122 (Option B).
From Group II
Candidates must take at least two subjects from code numbers 231, 232, 233, 236 (for blind candidates), or 237 (Option B).
From Group III
Candidates must take at least one subject with code 311, 312, or one subject among 313, 314, or 315. Only one religious subject and one Mathematics option may be taken.
Additional subject
One more subject must be selected from the remaining subjects in Group II, III, or IV (codes 441 to 451) or Group V (codes 501, 502, 503, 504, 511, and 565).
Candidates who sit for eight or nine subjects gain more grading options, as only the best seven subjects are used in computing the final mean grade.
How KCSE Mean Grades Are Calculated
Each KCSE subject is awarded points based on the grade attained. To compute the mean grade, KNEC totals the points scored in the seven selected subjects and derives the overall result.
The highest attainable grade is A (Plain), which carries 12 points, while the lowest grade is E, which carries 1 point.

Meaning of Special KCSE Mean Grade Symbols
In addition to letter grades, KNEC may award special symbols under specific circumstances:
X – Awarded when a candidate is absent in all subjects
Y – Awarded when one or more subject results are cancelled
U – Issued when KCSE entry requirements are not met
CRNM – Issued when course requirements for Teacher Education, Business, or Technical examinations are not met
P – Indicates results are pending
W – Issued when examination results are withheld
