Murang’a High School is a prestigious national boys’ secondary school located in Murang’a County, Kenya. The school was established in 1964 as a day school with just 35 students, founded by the late Bishop Caesar Gatimu of the Catholic Church. Over the years, it has grown substantially, becoming a leading educational institution known for its academic excellence.
In 1996, the late Bishop Gatimu requested the national government to take over the school’s management, and since then, Murang’a High School has transformed into a full boarding school. Today, the school accommodates over 1,200 students, and in 2014, it was elevated to national school status due to its significant growth both academically and physically.
Murang’a High School Performance
Murang’a High School has consistently demonstrated outstanding academic performance. In the 2024 KCSE, the school presented 436 candidates, with over 96% of them achieving the minimum university entry grade required for government sponsorship. This highlights the school’s dedication to providing quality education and preparing students for higher education.
The top-performing candidates of 2024 included 50 students who scored straight A’s, 108 students with A-, and 110 students who earned B+. Additionally, 66 students scored a B, 63 achieved B-, 24 students received C+, 9 scored C, and the lowest grade was C-, attained by six students. The overall mean score for the 2024 cohort was 9.720, an improvement from the 9.114 mean recorded in the 2023 KCSE.
Murang’a High School’s remarkable academic achievements were further exemplified by Robinson Wanjala, a former student, who emerged as the top candidate in the 2020 KCSE exams, securing the prestigious title of Kenya One.

As per the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, Murang’a High School falls under Cluster One (I) of national schools, with an official fee ceiling set at approximately Ksh75,798 per student per year. This fee includes tuition, administrative charges, and basic services.
