You can send money from Kenya to Mauritania on mobile primarily through international money transfer services like MoneyGram, WorldRemit, and Mukuru, and via partners of M-PESA Global. While direct mobile money wallet integration is available for services like Bankily, transfers generally involve cash pickup or bank transfers.

Using M-PESA Global with Partners

You can use your M-PESA account to fund transfers through M-PESA’s international partners like Western Union, allowing the recipient to collect cash at a local agent location in Mauritania.

Via the M-PESA App

  1. Open the M-PESA App and log in using your PIN.
  2. Navigate to the “Transact” section and select “Global”.
  3. Select a partner that serves Mauritania, such as Western Union or MoneyGram.
  4. Choose the option for cash pickup or bank transfer and enter the recipient’s details (full name as it appears on their ID document, phone number, and bank details if applicable).
  5. Enter the amount in KES. The app will display the exchange rate and total cost upfront.
  6. Confirm the transaction with your M-PESA PIN.
  7. Share the resulting Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) with the recipient so they can collect the cash in Mauritania.

Via USSD (*334# or *840#)

  1. Dial *334# or *840# on your Safaricom line.
  2. Select “Send Money” or “Send Money Abroad”, then “M-PESA Global”.
  3. Choose a partner like Western Union or MoneyGram.
  4. Follow the prompts to enter the recipient’s information and transfer amount.
  5. Review and confirm the transaction details with your M-PESA PIN.

Using Dedicated Money Transfer Apps

Third-party apps offer a direct way to manage the entire transfer process, including paying via debit/credit card or bank transfer from Kenya. These services also support deposits to mobile wallets (like Bankily) and bank accounts in Mauritania.

  • MoneyGram: Facilitates transfers to the Bankily mobile wallet, thousands of cash pickup locations (like Banque Populaire de Mauritanie), or directly to bank accounts via their MoneyGram App.
  • WorldRemit: Enables transfers to bank accounts or cash pickup locations in Mauritania via their mobile app. You can use the WorldRemit App to check availability and specific receive methods.
  • Mukuru: Offers a reliable way to send money for instant cash collection at their partner locations in Mauritania via their app or website.

Recipients in Mauritania generally receive funds in Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU) or another available currency to their mobile wallets, bank accounts, or via cash pickup. Comparing exchange rates and fees across different providers before sending is recommended.
