How to Invest 1 Million Shillings in Kenya (Tips and Ideas)

You can send money from Kenya to Mali on mobile using international money transfer services like WorldRemit, Mukuru, and MoneyGram, as well as through partners of M-PESA Global. Recipients can receive funds in their local mobile money accounts (such as Orange Money or Moov Money), for cash pickup, or as bank transfers.

Using M-PESA Global with Partners

You can use your M-PESA account to fund transfers through M-PESA’s international partners like Western Union, allowing the recipient to collect cash at a local agent location in Mali.

Via the M-PESA App

  1. Open the M-PESA App and log in using your PIN.
  2. Navigate to the “Transact” section and select “Global”.
  3. Select a partner that serves Mali, such as Western Union or MoneyGram.
  4. Choose the option for cash pickup or bank transfer and enter the recipient’s details (full name as it appears on their ID document, phone number, and bank details if applicable).
  5. Enter the amount in KES. The app will display the exchange rate and total cost upfront.
  6. Confirm the transaction with your M-PESA PIN.
  7. Share the resulting Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) with the recipient so they can collect the cash in Mali.

Via USSD (*334# or *840#)

  2. Select “Send Money” or “Send Money Abroad”, then “M-PESA Global”.
  3. Choose a partner like Western Union or MoneyGram.
  4. Follow the prompts to enter the recipient’s information and transfer amount.
  5. Review and confirm the transaction details with your M-PESA PIN.

Using Dedicated Money Transfer Apps

Third-party apps offer a direct way to manage the entire transfer process, including paying via debit/credit card or bank transfer from Kenya. These services also support direct deposits to mobile wallets (like Orange Money) and bank accounts in Mali.

  • WorldRemit: Offers instant transfers to mobile money accounts, bank accounts, and cash pickup locations in Mali. You can use the WorldRemit App to manage the process and compare exchange rates.
  • Mukuru: Offers a reliable way to send money for instant cash collection at their partner locations in Mali or potentially directly to a mobile wallet via their app or website. You can use the Mukuru App to initiate a transfer.
  • MoneyGram: Facilitates transfers to thousands of cash pickup locations or directly to bank accounts in Mali via their MoneyGram App.

Recipients in Mali generally receive funds in West African CFA Francs (XOF) to their mobile wallets or via cash pickup. Comparing exchange rates and fees across different providers before sending is recommended.
