Samsung Unveils Patent for 360-Degree Foldable Smartphone

Samsung continues to push the boundaries of mobile innovation with a newly published patent for a 360-degree foldable smartphone, allowing the display to fold both inward and outward. This bold design eliminates the need for a separate outer screen while maintaining flexibility and durability.

  • 🧪 Concept Roots in “Flex In & Out”

🔄 A Dual-Direction Fold

Current foldable phones typically fall into two categories:

  • Inward foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold series, which protect the main screen when shut.
  • Outward foldables, like Huawei’s Mate X, which expose the screen but offer a sleeker look.

Samsung’s new patent, however, merges the best of both worlds. The concept allows users to fold the phone in both directions, offering more versatility and convenience. In its folded state, the device even retains an exposed display strip under the camera module, which could serve as a notification bar or touch interface.

🔬 The Technology Behind the Design

The patent—originally spotted by @xleaks7—details some of the innovative materials and engineering that make this 360-degree flexibility possible:

  • Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) with flexible polymer substrates
  • A flexible adhesive layer that supports bidirectional movement
  • Custom support plates with lattice and stripe patterns, enabling foldability on both axes

This multi-layered display structure enhances durability without sacrificing the slim profile needed for modern foldables.

🧪 Concept Roots in “Flex In & Out”

Samsung’s vision for a 360-degree foldable isn’t entirely new. The company demoed a “Flex In & Out” prototype back in 2023, showcasing similar capabilities. However, this newly published patent suggests significant progress toward bringing such a concept closer to commercial viability.

🔮 What’s Next for Samsung Foldables?

Although Samsung has not officially announced a launch timeline, this patent hints at what could be the next evolution in foldable technology. By removing the need for a separate cover screen and offering greater folding freedom, Samsung could soon set a new standard in smartphone design.

Consumers and tech enthusiasts can expect future devices that are:

  • More compact when folded
  • More immersive when unfolded
  • More durable than current outward-folding phones

Whether or not the 360-degree foldable becomes a flagship product, Samsung’s latest innovation reaffirms its dominance in the foldable smartphone race.

Stay tuned as we await more details or a prototype announcement in the coming months.
