Ruth Busia Adhiambo Odinga is a Kenyan politician currently serving as the Women’s Representative for Kisumu County in the National Assembly. She is a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and hails from Kenya’s most influential political dynasty — the Odinga family. Ruth is the daughter of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President, and the sister to Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister, and Oburu Odinga, the Siaya Senator.

Born in Kisumu County, Ruth Odinga has built her reputation as a resilient leader, women’s rights advocate, and public servant dedicated to advancing gender equality and community development.

Early Life and Education

Ruth Odinga began her studies at Xaverian Primary School in Kisumu, where she earned her East African Certificate of Primary Education (EACPE) in 1973. She proceeded to The Kenya High School, completing her East African Advanced Certificate of Education (EAACE) in 1981.

In pursuit of higher education, she joined Mutare Girls High School in Zimbabwe in 1983 for her A Levels before enrolling at the University of Oslo in Norway. There, she obtained a degree in Social Science in 1985 and later a Postgraduate Certificate in Development Studies in 1989. Her international exposure shaped her worldview on leadership and development, preparing her for public service.

Career and Leadership Roles

Before entering politics, Ruth Odinga built an impressive career in the private sector. She worked at Spectre International Limited, a gas and energy company associated with her family, where she served as Managing Director and later as CEO between 2005 and 2013.

Her other leadership positions include Managing Director at Petro Plus Africa (2002–2005) and Development Officer with the African Community Development Association in London between 1998 and 2002. Ruth also taught Geography at Marina International High School in Gambia from 1992 to 1995.

Beyond business, she has held various community leadership roles, including Chairlady of Nyahera Sub-County District Hospital, board member of Bar Union School, and founder of the Kenya Network of Women Governors (KEWOG). She is also a member of professional bodies such as the Kenya Institute of Management, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, and the East African Business Council.

Political Career

Ruth Odinga officially entered politics in 2013, contesting the Kisumu gubernatorial race under the ODM party. Although she lost to Jack Ranguma, she was appointed Deputy Governor of Kisumu County (2013–2017).

During her tenure, she championed community health, youth empowerment, and gender inclusion. From 2017 to 2022, she served as Senior Advisor to the Governor of Kisumu and Director of Special Programs and Disaster Management.

In August 2022, Ruth Odinga was elected as Kisumu County Women Representative in the 13th Parliament of Kenya, defeating Valentine Anyango of the Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) party. In Parliament, she has been a vocal advocate for women’s empowerment, pushing for equitable representation in leadership and sustainable economic programs for women.

Her activism extends beyond politics — she continues to lead KEWOG and has received the Gender Champion Award from the Kenyan Department of Gender.
