Former Cabinet Minister Cyrus Jirongo Dies in Early Morning Crash

Cyrus Jirongo, the former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament for Lugari, tragically passed away in a fatal road crash on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at around 3:00 am. The 64-year-old politician, known for his contributions to Kenyan politics, was involved in a grisly accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Naivasha, leaving the nation in mourning.

Details of the Accident

According to Rift Valley traffic enforcement officer Sarah Chumo, Jirongo’s car collided with a 65-seater passenger bus in the Karai area of Naivasha. The crash, which occurred while Jirongo was driving to Nairobi, resulted in severe damage to his vehicle. Tragically, the former Minister died on the spot.

Sources close to the scene reported that the collision was particularly violent, with Jirongo’s vehicle reportedly ramming into the bus. The 64-year-old had been traveling alone at the time of the incident.

Cyrus Jirongo’s Political Career

Cyrus Jirongo was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics. He served as the Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency for two terms, first between 1997 and 2002, and later between 2007 and 2013. Jirongo also held a Cabinet position as the Minister for Rural Development during the administration of President Daniel Moi from March to December 2002.

In 2017, Jirongo ran for president under the United Democratic Party (UDP) but did not achieve significant success, securing only 11,000 votes (0.07% of the total vote). Despite the loss, he remained a notable figure in Kenya’s political scene.

In the 2022 general elections, Jirongo contested the Kakamega gubernatorial position under the UDP but lost to Fernandes Barasa of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Following his electoral defeat, he had largely kept a low profile, though he did endorse and actively campaign for DAP-Kenya’s Seth Panyako during the Malava by-elections held on November 27, 2025.

Tributes and Condolences

The news of Jirongo’s untimely passing has drawn tributes from across Kenya’s political spectrum. Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka expressed his grief, describing Jirongo as “one of our greatest sons.” He added, “Death has robbed us of an icon. Rest in peace, Honourable Cyrus Jirongo.”

Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, a long-time ally of Jirongo, shared his condolences via social media. He said, “This morning, with a lot of shock and sadness, I have learnt of the passing on of Cyrus Jirongo, who was an asset to our community and Kenya. We loved him, but God loved him more. May your soul rest in peace!”

Legacy in Business and Politics

Beyond his political career, Cyrus Jirongo was also known for his business ventures. His influence in the political arena, especially within the KANU party during the 1990s, remains noteworthy. Despite his later years of political decline, Jirongo’s impact on Kenyan politics, particularly in Western Kenya, will not be forgotten.

In 2017, Jirongo’s bid for the presidency was an example of his unwavering belief in Kenya’s potential for change. His candidacy, though not successful, was a reflection of his enduring ambition and commitment to national development.

Conclusion

Cyrus Jirongo’s sudden death has left a gap in Kenyan politics, where he was both a leader and an advocate for change. His contribution to the political landscape, both as a legislator and as a Cabinet Minister, will be remembered. The country, especially his constituents in Lugari, will mourn the loss of a significant political figure.

As we reflect on his legacy, it’s evident that Jirongo’s life was marked by a deep commitment to public service, despite the challenges he faced in his later political endeavors. His passing is a reminder of the fleeting nature of life, but also the lasting impact one can have on their country.
