Philip Odera is a distinguished economist, businessman, and banking executive from Kenya, known for his significant contributions to the banking sector in the East African Community. As of 2015, he is the designated Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CfC Stanbic Bank Limited, a major Kenyan financial institution boasting assets around US$2 billion as of December 2013.
Born around 1961 in Maseno, Kisumu County, in Kenya’s former Nyanza Province, Odera pursued his higher education in the United States. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Lawrence University, New York, and later achieved a Master of Business Administration with a major in Finance from Suffolk University in Massachusetts.
Odera’s career in banking is marked by significant leadership roles across Africa. Prior to his role in Uganda, he was part of Stanbic IBTC Bank in Nigeria, a key player in the Nigerian banking sector with assets exceeding NGN:763 billion (US$3.74 billion) as of December 2013. From 2007 to 2014, he led Stanbic Bank Uganda as the Managing Director and CEO, guiding it to become the country’s largest commercial bank by assets.
In February 2015, he was appointed as the CEO of CfC Stanbic Bank by its board of directors, subject to regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Kenya. Odera’s leadership spans across multiple African countries, reflecting his deep expertise and impactful presence in the continent’s financial landscape.
